The Bahamas: A Race to Remember

UWC Bahamas Triathlon Just a week ago, I had no idea what UWC was. I also only remembered the Bahamas from a Disney cruise I did a lifetime ago. On my way back from Nassau after racing the 2nd annual UWC Bahamas Triathlon, I have a whole new appreciation for the island, its residents and a truly phenomenal charity supporting its youth.   I cannot think of a better way to close out the 2012 triathlon season than in the Bahamas, and, to top it off, helping to promote an organization – United World Colleges- that helps pave the way for an exceptional, diverse group of young people to get outstanding educational and international experiences that open new opportunities and invest in the future.   Yep. A race in an idyllic setting that aims to do good:...

Austin 70.3: What To Expect When You Don’t Know What You’re Expecting

Austin 70.3: What To Expect When You Don’t Know What You’re Expecting

Coming off months of injury, cankle rehabilitation and a forced running hiatus, I had no idea what to expect at Ironman 70.3 Austin. Would the ankle hold up? Where was my fitness, really? It was almost like a first race of the season, without the benefit (or the pressure) of a full upcoming race calendar.   The plan was simple: Go for it! And I surprised myself: I felt GREAT…Well, until I didn’t. A solid (albeit solo) swim, second fastest bike (I even got airborne a few times), and for the first 2 laps, a fantastic, Oh my gosh, I’m really running! kind of run, working my way to 2nd place, which quickly unraveled to final lap of Ugh…Are we there yet?” and a 5th place finish. Still, reflecting on the weekend, I’m happy with the result,...

LA to Boulder to Napa Valley: Some Recapping

After a stretch of back-to-back racing, I had resigned myself to not writing a race report. I had waited too long; it wouldn’t be interesting anymore…   And then, I got a random email from Freeplay Magazine with some great pictures from my most recent race: Vineman 70.3. Reliving the moment, seeing the pain, exhaustion, and smile on my face (at the finish) reignited a desire to write at least a recap of the last few weeks, the highs the lows and some of the in betweens.   It’s been a whirlwind. DC –> Philly –> DC –> Boulder –> LA –> San Francisco –> Napa Valley –> San Francisco –> LA… and then purplepatch training camp.   A quick recap of the races: 3rd at Philly...

Boise 70.3 Sufferfest

Boise 70.3 Sufferfest

“After the llamas, after the goats, take a right turn…. Oh wait. It’s the other way… A LEFT past the horses, THEN the goats.” These are directions I received for my first bike ride into downtown Boise from my cousin’s home. As a ranch girl, I was instantly in love with this quintessentially Western town nestled in Idaho’s foothills. In describing the weather here, however, my cousin said, “In Idaho, if you don’t like the weather, wait 15 minutes.”  And I knew from my sister, who recently raced the Exergy Tour, that the weather was bound to change. And change it certainly did. Arrival weather: warm, big puffy clouds, giant blue sky. Race day forecast: wet, cold, windy.  This pretty much sums it up: But, armed with my new Shiv, dubbed...
